Festivale Celebrates 10 Years Serving Special Needs Youth
FESTIVALE was born in 2013 out of a desire to ensure that special needs students didn’t miss out on their prom, which had been canceled. With immense dedication and a “shoe-string budget,” the first prom-replacement party was held at Brookside Country Club. It was an overwhelming success, captivating approximately 170 students and pushing total attendance, with teachers and staff, to over 200. The event left a lasting impression, with many exclaiming, “I can’t believe you did this just for us,” with a local newspaper declaring it “OVER THE TOP!”
What began as a heartfelt initiative to replace a canceled prom has blossomed into a cherished annual tradition. Now, FESTIVALE proudly celebrates its 10th anniversary, a testament to its enduring success and the dedication of its organizers and community sponsors. Hosted annually by the Junior League of San Joaquin County (JLSJC), this beloved event caters to 18-22-year-old special needs students enrolled in San Joaquin County Young Adult Programs. Each year brings a new and exciting theme, encouraging students to embrace the spirit by coordinating their outfits. This year’s milestone anniversary promises to be particularly vibrant with a sports theme, generating palpable excitement among students and teachers alike!
The success of FESTIVALE is largely powered by the generosity of our sponsors, whose support is invaluable for this often-overlooked population. The event’s attendance has doubled from the original 200 to approximately 400 attendees, with a significant waiting list still remaining. The increasing demand clearly highlights the community’s deep appreciation and need for such an inclusive celebration.
Beyond the annual celebration, the Junior League of San Joaquin County has expanded its commitment to these special students. Several new JLSJC projects are now in place to further enhance their vocational prospects and life skills, empowering them to thrive as independently as possible.
The Junior League of SJC’s dedication to this community truly makes a difference in the lives of these young adults, offering both memorable experiences and vital support for their future.
